National Water Quality Month is celebrated in August each year. It reminds us of the importance of conserving water.
Farmers and ranchers conserve more than 11 billion gallons of freshwater each year through best management practices such as precise irrigation techniques and comprehensive recycling systems.
According to the American Water Works Association, the average person uses 82 gallons of water or more each day. This includes bathing, cleaning, household waste and drinking water.
As a consumer, we can also help protect our water quality. Tips include following best management practices when watering and fertilizing lawns such as drip-irrigation water systems, picking up after your pet, properly disposing of prescription medications or pollutants such as oil, paint or antifreeze.
