National Biotech Disclosure Signed Into Law
Aug. 2, 2016
President Barack Obama signed a national biotech disclosure bill into law on July 29.
The law pre-empts all state labeling laws so that there will be a single uniform standard instead of a patchwork of regulations. It requires a disclosure about bioengineered foods on packaging within three years.
Food producers and processors can meet the requirement with a statement on the package, a QR code that links to the ingredients or a label with a telephone number consumers can call for information.
Beef, chicken, pork and other meats raised on bioengineered feeds are not included under the law’s provisions.
The text of the bill is posted at here.
