USDA ANNOUNCES FARM ASSISTANCE DURING TRADE TALKS
On July 24, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the availability of $12 billion to aid farmers who stand to lose income because of tariff hikes by foreign nations. The money is intended as a temporary support while the administration negotiates new international trade agreements.

DROUGHT-TOLERANT PEANUTS
Scientists from the University of Florida and Georgia Institute of Technology will begin to work on a more resilient crop. The research will allow growers to produce a more market-ready peanut.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR EXCELLENCE IN CROP ADVISING AWARD
In partnership with the Florida Certified Crop Advisers Board, Florida Farm Bureau is seeking nominations for a Certified Crop Adviser who goes above and beyond to assist growers in their agronomic needs. The award recipient will receive $500 cash and will be recognized at Florida Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting in October. Nominations must be submitted online by Oct. 1.

YOUTH SPEECH CONTEST OPEN TO TEENS
Applications are open to students between 14 and 18 years of age who want to polish their speaking skills. This year’s topic will be “How has the introduction of agricultural mobile apps impacted the agriculture industry?” The deadline for submissions is Sept. 14. To participate, students should contact their local Farm Bureau.
