FUNGI TO HELP CONTROL DEADLY FUSARIUM WILT
A group of fungi may help fight the deadly Fusarium wilt disease that attacks tomatoes and specialty crops. University of Florida researchers hope to use trichoderma-based biological control agents to supplement various pest management methods to help growers control Fusarium wilt.

FLORIDA FOREST SERVICE HELPS COMBAT SOUTHERN PINE BEETLE
To help combat the invasive Southern Pine Beetle, the Florida Forest Service is accepting applications for the 2018 Southern Pine Beetle Assistance and Prevention Program from non-industrial, private forest landowners through June 29. The program is limited to 44 northern Florida counties, the known range of the southern pine beetle.

HYDRAULIC FLUID 303: A WARNING
Georgia and Missouri have issued stop sale orders on “303” Tractor Hydraulic Fluid (THF) used in farm and industrial tractors and construction equipment. THF serves as a hydraulic and transmission fluid and gear oil.

USDA ANNOUNCES CITRUS HURRICANE RECOVERY DETAILS
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced details on eligibility for a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) disaster program, 2017 Wildfires and Hurricanes Indemnity Program (2017 WHIP). Additionally, USDA will provide $340 million through a block grant to the state of Florida for Hurricane Irma losses to citrus production expected during the 2018 through the 2020 crop year, reimbursement for the cost of buying and planting replacement trees – including resetting and grove rehabilitation – and for repair of damages to irrigation systems, among other restoration projects.

Farm Bureau members can showcase Florida agriculture and the people who make it a success in Florida Farm Bureau’s 2018 Online Photo Contest. The contest offers photographers the opportunity to explore the many activities, seasons, triumphs and faces of Florida agriculture. Winning photos will be published in various Florida Farm Bureau Federation media.

FFB TOBACCO SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Florida Farm Bureau is accepting scholarship applications for Florida flue-cured tobacco growers and their descendants. Florida Farm Bureau will award scholarships of up to $2,000 to qualified applicants. The deadline to apply is July 1, 2018.

AGRICULTURAL LITERACY IN WILLISTON
Tina Garrett and Dolores Worthington of the Levy County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee visited a 2nd grade classroom on May 23 to read this year’s Agriculture Literacy Day book “Drive Through Florida: Fruit.” The students enjoyed fresh Florida watermelon and blueberries and were able to take home a tomato seed to germinate.

DOR RELEASES DETAILS ON DISASTER RELIEF SALES TAX REBATE PROGRAM
Farm families looking to take advantage of the state sales tax rebate program can begin the process of applying for refunds on the sales taxes paid on hurricane-damaged farm fencing and non-residential building materials that were purchased between Sept. 10, 2017 and May 31, 2018.
