The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has rejected a formal 301 investigation against Mexico for unfair trade practices involving fresh fruits and vegetables.
This action was prompted by a Florida delegation-led petition on Sept. 8 to ask for an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
“The extensive record of this issue on market impacts is at odds with this decision,” stated Florida Farm Bureau President Jeb S. Smith. “However, we are grateful to USTR for a commitment to help our family farms and seek viable pathways to sustain them. The facts demand it.”
Specifically, USTR, in consultation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will create a “private-sector industry advisory panel to recommend measures…,” according to the USTR press statement on Oct. 23.
Added Smith, “This advisory panel has the potential to surface real solutions to this very real problem. We look forward to enhanced collaboration with the Biden administration on a workable remedy and a chance to place Florida voices at the table.”
