Florida landowners use prescribed burns as part of their responsible resource management. This tool preserves wildlife habitat, the nutrient content of soils and healthy forests. It also reduces the risk of wildfires.
The Florida Forest Service has designated Jan. 25 through Jan. 31 as Prescribed Fire Awareness Week. State Forester Jim Karels encouraged the careful use of prescribed fire throughout the state. “In addition to its vital role in Florida’s ecosystems, prescribed fire helps keep citizens and homes safe.” Karels said.
Forest Service officials have developed a variety of tools for trained individuals who conduct prescribed burns. For more information, visit http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Florida-Forest-Service.
