More than 600 acres are ablaze near Callaway, east of Panama City.  At the time of publication, the fire was at 50% containment.

On Monday, April 1, 2019, Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried held a press briefing on a wildfire in Bay County.

The tremendous amount of downed trees left in the wake of Hurricane Michael has made suppression efforts difficult for emergency management.

“These fires are growing extremely rapidly, from a few acres on Saturday to more than 600 acres today,” commented Fried. “With 72 million tons of trees down, the threat of fire continues to grow.”

Fried thanked the firefighters and emergency personnel for their efforts in attempting to contain the fire.

“I will continue to make disaster relief and fire prevention a top priority,” noted Fried.
