PLANT HORMONES BATTLE GREENING
Researchers at UF/IFAS are studying the effects of a plant hormone to help battle citrus greening. Early research shows that with the hormone, fruit is maturing faster and is 20 percent heavier. Scientists have seen a 15 to 20 percent increase in fruit on treated trees.

Volusia County native Victoria Register represents District 4 on the Florida Farm Bureau State Women’s Committee. She and her fiancé, Brian, currently live in Holly Hill with their three pups, Malibu, Harley and Tucker. The couple plans to marry next fall.

Cary Lightsey received Florida Farm Bureau’s CARES designation in 2012. Lightsey utilizes Best Management Practices (BMPs) to transition 85 percent of his family’s property into conservation easements. These easements preserve local wildlife and natural resources and recharge the Florida Aquifer.

2017 WILDFIRES AND HURRICANES INDEMNITY PROGRAM (WHIP) DEADLINE
Producers affected by hurricanes and wildfires in 2017 can apply for assistance through the WHIP program starting July 16, 2018 and running to November 16, 2018. Agricultural production losses due to conditions caused by last year’s wildfires and hurricanes could qualify for assistance through the program. The program is available to eligible producers for crops, trees, bushes and vines which suffered a qualifying loss. Loss includes 1) Production losses from eligible crops 2) Inventory losses for value loss crops 3) Tree/bush/vine losses.

USDA RELEASES TRADE AID PACKAGE
In response to the flurry of retaliatory trade actions from several countries, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has exercised its borrowing authority to deliver a series of assistance programs to those commodities and agricultural sectors damaged by tariffs.

FLORIDA FARM BUREAU LOOKS AHEAD TO NOVEMBER
As we all recover from the recent primary election, it is time to turn our attention to the November general election that will see four highly contested cabinet seats, several toss-up seats in the state House and Senate and although we’re not exactly sure how many at this time, several constitutional amendments.
